Welcome!
AI for the vehicle of the future
The KARLI consortium is developing AI applications for the introduction of multi-level automated vehicles.
Activities within the funding project have been completed since September 2024.
The KARLI project
Our goal
The goal of the KARLI project is to develop an adaptive, responsive and level-compliant interaction in the vehicles of the future. To this end, customer-relevant AI functions are being developed in KARLI that detect driver states and design interactions for different automation levels.
These AI functions are developed in KARLI from empirical and synthetically generated data. The data will be collected and used in KARLI in such a way that the project results are scalable to Big Data from production vehicles available in the future.
The KARLI subprojects
The target applications
KARLI’s target applications are aligned with the overall goal of “level-compliant driver behavior.”
The drivers state, his behavior and his probable ability to act are derived from the current driving situation, including the level of automation.
The recording of the driving situation and the driver’s condition thus allows an actual-target comparison and a targeted approach in the dialog between human and machine.

KARLI & funding policy goals

“Artificial Intelligence Strategy” of the German Federal Government
KARLI supports the implementation of the German government’s “High-Tech Strategy for Intelligent Mobility”.

“Research for autonomous driving” by BMWi, BMVI and BMBF
The KARLI applications are an implementation contribution to the action plan “Research for Autonomous Driving” of the federal ministries BMWi, BMVI and BMBF.

“Third Mobility Package” by the European Parliament
With the Third Mobility Package, the European Parliament is obliging manufacturers to install systems that monitor driver states during type approval starting in 2022.
The consortium
12 partners from research, industry & technology consulting
The development of AI know-how is significantly accelerated by the ambitious project goals and the cooperation in the consortium.
The consortium is composed of the following companies:
- Continental Automotive Gmbh
- Ford-Werke GmbH
- Audi AG
- INVENSITY GmbH
- paragon semvox GmbH
- TWT GmbH Science & Innovation
