Development of AI-Interaction

Intelligent driving of the future requires the development of AI systems that are capable of triggering interactions in the vehicle in a person- and context-sensitive manner. This AI-driven interaction contributes greatly to road safety, takeover quality and user experience in the vehicle.

Problem

Due to the varying characteristics of individuals (e.g., cognitive, hedonic), situation-specific requirements in road traffic (e.g., country road driving), and the increasing complexity of vehicle systems (e.g., level of automated driving), adaptability of the operating concept to the user and context must be a core requirement for interaction in intelligent vehicles of the future.

Solution approach

AI-systems are being developed that enable person- and context-sensitive triggering of interactions in the vehicle. In this way, AI-controlled interaction not only makes an important contribution to traffic safety, but also to the quality of the user experience for drivers.

The AI-models control both adaptive functions and adaptive human-machine interaction (HMI).

Goal

The development of AI-interactions has several goals. These include the development of various models. Within this framework, models for user experience, AI-models for functions in the vehicle interior, and AI-models for the human-machine interaction of defined functions are being developed. In order to improve the described AI-models, an evaluation and a test person study will be conducted.

The development of an agent system according to the scheme “Ask the right question in the right moment” should lead to an optimal and user-oriented operation. Another aspect of the work package is to develop an operating concept for this system. The derivation of an evaluation guideline for adaptive functions and adaptive human-machine interaction rounds off the objectives of the work package.

Report abstract: Display of Artificial Intelligence in the Vehicle HMI

The KARLI AI-MMI (Artificial Intelligence of Human-Machine Interaction) work package focuses on the question of how the use of AI will affect the appearance of an MMI. This is also the subject of the report “Display of Artificial Intelligence in the Vehicle HMI” by Dr.-Ing Peter Rössger. Read the summary here.

UX concepts for the vehicle of the future. KARLI & HdM.

The focus of the Stuttgart Media University (HdM) in the KARLI project is on the evaluation and development of user-centered AI solutions for automated driving vehicles. The goal is to combine a high level of safety with a successful user experience (UX).

Developing AI-driven in-vehicle interaction. KARLI & Audi.

Within KARLI, Audi is working on AI-based interactions in the vehicle with regard to person- and context-sensitivity. The goal is for the human-machine interface to behave adaptively based on the user and system state of the individual operating history.
